Je ne d\u00e9couvre ce petit livre que maintenant, bien qu\u2019il ait paru en 2024. Mais je ne crois pas qu\u2019il ait connu une tr\u00e8s large diffusion. En outre, il faut avouer que l\u2019objet est peu s\u00e9duisant. Il est avant tout factuel (la phrase type \u00e9tant \u00ab en telle ann\u00e9e, untel dessine telle s\u00e9rie \u00bb), propose tr\u00e8s peu de contextualisation et encore moins de description ou d\u2019analyse des \u0153uvres mentionn\u00e9es.\u00a0Cependant il rassemble quantit\u00e9 d\u2019informations, que l\u2019on e\u00fbt aim\u00e9 voir plus d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es, sur des pans m\u00e9connus de la BD internationale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Au hasard des pages, on peut ainsi d\u00e9couvrir, page 37, la premi\u00e8re bande dessin\u00e9e de l\u2019Oc\u00e9an indien, publi\u00e9e \u00e0 la R\u00e9union dans la revue satirique <em>La Lanterne<\/em>, d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1840 qui virent le d\u00e9c\u00e8s de T\u00f6pffer, et sous l\u2019influence manifeste du Genevois. Ces planches pr\u00e9coces \u00e9taient sign\u00e9es d\u2019un certain Adolphe Pot\u00e9mont, parisien de naissance, qui ne manquait assur\u00e9ment pas de talent mais qui fut victime de l\u2019ind\u00e9licatesse de son coll\u00e8gue et rival Antoine Roussin, lequel, \u00e0 sa mort, s\u2019attribua ses cr\u00e9ations (un article d\u2019Appollo dans <em>Le Cri du Margouillat<\/em> n\u00b0 30, en 2016, avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 attir\u00e9 l\u2019attention sur cet \u00e9pisode). Peintre et graveur, Pot\u00e9mont avait s\u00e9journ\u00e9 dix ans sur l\u2019\u00eele, de 1847 \u00e0 1857.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De Roussin (qui, lui, y v\u00e9cut de 1842 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort, en 1894), les auteurs reproduisent, sans que l\u2019on sache bien pourtant, l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 du r\u00e9cit <em>Voyage de M. Chose dans la mer des Indes<\/em>, une satire assez d\u00e9cousue, dont la mise en page varie curieusement d\u2019une page \u00e0 l\u2019autre, et dont le protagoniste, au cours de ses p\u00e9r\u00e9grinations, fait diverses rencontres dont celle de Saint Pierre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ailleurs, ils donnent un aper\u00e7u sur les revues satiriques qui paraissaient \u00e0 Alger dans les ann\u00e9es 1860, <em>Chitann<\/em> et <em>Le Grelot<\/em>. Les aventures de Tintin furent d\u2019ailleurs publi\u00e9es dans diff\u00e9rents supports de presse \u00e0 travers le continent africain, quelquefois redessin\u00e9es sur place par des plagiaires anonymes, afin de ne pas avoir de droits \u00e0 acquitter. C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019en \u00c9gypte, un Tintin \u00ab brun et sans houpette \u00bb fit carri\u00e8re dans les ann\u00e9es 1940 dans les pages de <em>Al-Katk\u00fbt<\/em> (cf. p. 81).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En Afrique du sud, la bande dessin\u00e9e, le plus souvent en afrikaans, se r\u00e9pandit d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1920, souvent teint\u00e9e de racisme.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La premi\u00e8re BD camerounaise, en 1940, avait pour titre <em>La Rate et les quatre ratons<\/em>, et \u00e9tait sign\u00e9e d\u2019un artiste plus qu\u2019estimable (calligraphe, peintre et dessinateur), Ibrahim Njoya \u2013 homonyme du roi qui na\u00eetra cinquante ans apr\u00e8s lui \u2013, auquel Cassiau-Haurie avait rendu hommage d\u00e8s 2013 sur <em>BDzoom <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdzoom.com\/64560\/patrimoine\/hommage-a-ibrahim-njoya-premier-auteur-de-bande-dessinee-d%E2%80%99afrique\/\">https:\/\/www.bdzoom.com\/64560\/patrimoine\/hommage-a-ibrahim-njoya-premier-auteur-de-bande-dessinee-d\u2019afrique\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Au Kenya, le premier dessinateur indig\u00e8ne fut William S. Agutu, qui produisit la s\u00e9rie <em>Mrefu<\/em> pour le magazine <em>Tazama<\/em>, \u00e0 compter de 1952.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le lecteur apprendra bien d\u2019autres choses encore, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 un petit d\u00e9gagement final sur la place que super-h\u00e9ros et mangas ont pris r\u00e9cemment sur le march\u00e9 africain. Mais le premier super-h\u00e9ros du continent aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 <em>Sao<\/em>, dessin\u00e9 par Paul Merle en 1957 pour le journal d\u2019Elisabethville <em>L\u2019Avenir<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ce petit essai constitue donc une contribution pr\u00e9cieuse \u00e0 l\u2019histoire de la bande dessin\u00e9e mondiale, trop souvent limit\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019Europe, aux Am\u00e9riques et \u00e0 l\u2019Asie. Il est vraiment regrettable que les auteurs n\u2019aient pas eu acc\u00e8s \u00e0 de meilleurs documents et ne se soient pas souci\u00e9 de produire le beau livre qu\u2019un tel sujet aurait m\u00e9rit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Christophe Cassiau-Haurie et Christophe Meunier, <em>La Bande dessin\u00e9e en Afrique \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque coloniale.
