Le nouveau roman graphique d\u2019Alison Bechdel, intitul\u00e9 Spent<\/em> (un titre qui s’offre \u00e0 de multiples interpr\u00e9tations) est disponible dans l\u2019\u00e9dition am\u00e9ricaine de Jonathan Cape, parue en mai, mais il faudra attendre octobre pour le d\u00e9couvrir en version fran\u00e7aise, chez Deno\u00ebl Graphic, sous le titre Lessiv\u00e9e<\/em>. Livr\u00e9 seulement trois ans apr\u00e8s Le Secret de la force surhumaine,<\/em> cet ouvrage ne manquera pas de surprendre les admirateurs et admiratrices de l\u2019autrice. Alors que son ma\u00eetre livre, Fun Home<\/em>, et le suivant, C\u2019est toi ma maman\u00a0?<\/em>, se donnaient comme des autobiographies s\u2019effor\u00e7ant de serrer au plus pr\u00e8s la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, il s\u2019agit en effet cette fois d\u2019une autofiction qui comprend de nombreux \u00e9l\u00e9ments de pure invention.<\/p>\n

Si Alison vit bien dans un coin tr\u00e8s rural du Vermont avec sa compagne Holly Rae Taylor et si celle-ci est en effet passionn\u00e9e de jardinage et de compost, le couple n\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve pas de ch\u00e8vres naines comme Stent <\/em>le relate. Dans la r\u00e9alit\u00e9, Alison n\u2019a pas de s\u0153ur. Et si certaines de ses \u0153uvres ont connu des adaptations (Fun Home<\/em> est devenu une com\u00e9die musicale \u00e0 Broadway, Dykes To Watch Out For<\/em> une s\u00e9rie de podcasts), elle n\u2019a jamais vu sa vie transpos\u00e9e sur le petit \u00e9cran sous la forme d\u2019une s\u00e9rie peu respectueuse.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est tout le jeu auquel se livre l\u2019autrice dans ce livre, d\u2019inviter ses lecteurs et lectrices \u00e0 d\u00e9m\u00ealer le vrai du faux. Trois \u00e9l\u00e9ments mettent rapidement la puce \u00e0 l\u2019oreille. D\u2019abord l\u2019illustration de couverture, qui adresse un clin d\u2019\u0153il au c\u00e9l\u00e8bre tableau de Grant Wood American Gothic<\/em>, l\u2019une des \u0153uvres les plus souvent d\u00e9tourn\u00e9es de toute l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art am\u00e9ricain\u00a0(sur lequel le motif de la fourche a parfois \u00e9t\u00e9 interpr\u00e9t\u00e9 comme l\u2019\u00e9vocation d\u2019une sexualit\u00e9 consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme perverse) ; ensuite le livre n’est pas sous-titr\u00e9 a graphic novel<\/em> mais bien a comic novel<\/em>, et dans cette appellation comic <\/em>ne renvoie habituellement pas \u00e0 une BD mais au caract\u00e8re humoristique du r\u00e9cit\u00a0; enfin, parmi les amis et relations gravitant autour du couple \u00ab Al et Hol \u00bb, on peut reconna\u00eetre plusieurs des personnages de la s\u00e9rie Dykes To Watch Out For<\/em>, de sorte que personnes r\u00e9elles et personnages fictionnels sont ici m\u00e9lang\u00e9s, sans que rien les distingue.<\/p>\n

R\u00e9cit polyphonique au ton de com\u00e9die, Spent<\/em> brasse de nombreux sujets (l\u2019\u00e9cologie, l\u2019amiti\u00e9, le polyamour, l\u2019importance prise par les r\u00e9seaux sociaux\u2026) mais celui qui domine est l\u2019anxi\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019Alison face au d\u00e9litement du monde, \u00e0 la multiplication des crises. Le fait d\u2019appartenir \u00e0 une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration qui n\u2019a pas su pr\u00e9server la plan\u00e8te, et de se voir pousser aux fesses par des jeunes plus radicaux, est pour elle un facteur de lourde culpabilit\u00e9, tout comme les compromis que l\u2019artiste a consenti \u00e0 passer avec l\u2019industrie du divertissement.<\/p>\n

Le livre a \u00e9t\u00e9 termin\u00e9 avant le retour de Trump \u00e0 la Maison blanche, mais il y est d\u00e9j\u00e0 beaucoup question des menaces qu\u2019incarne le trumpisme. Bechdel, qui depuis 2024 enseigne \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Yale au sein du d\u00e9partement des Film & Media Studies, en se d\u00e9finissant comme \u00ab a lesbian cartoonist<\/em> \u00bb et en faisant moult r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 la culture queer, repr\u00e9sente de toute \u00e9vidence ce que le pr\u00e9sident am\u00e9ricain d\u00e9teste et veut \u00e9radiquer.
