Longtemps le roman-photo, sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9 de magazines comme Nous Deux<\/em> ou Confidences<\/em>, a \u00e9t\u00e9 assimil\u00e9 au genre sentimental. Son histoire a bien \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9e par quelques incursions dans d\u2019autres territoires\u00a0; il s\u2019est notamment fait \u00e9rotique, documentaire (les reportages de Jean Teul\u00e9\u00a0; ou plus r\u00e9cemment Les Femmes du lien<\/em>, de Vincent Jarousseau, aux Ar\u00e8nes), parodique (dans Hara-Kiri<\/em>) ou c\u00e9r\u00e9bral (les livres du duo Beno\u00eet Peeters\/Marie-Fran\u00e7oise Plissart). Une grande exposition au Mucem en 2017-2018 avait fait le tour de la question.<\/p>\n

Mais depuis quelques ann\u00e9es, si le roman-photo fait un retour en force, il le doit principalement au succ\u00e8s de titres d\u00e9di\u00e9s \u00e0\u2026 l\u2019humour. Et dans ce spectaculaire retour en gr\u00e2ce, le milieu de la bande dessin\u00e9e est la principale force de proposition. Je pense ici, non, seulement \u00e0 Teul\u00e9 et Peeters d\u00e9j\u00e0 cit\u00e9s, mais \u00e0 Fluide glacial<\/em>, qui publia chaque mois un roman-photo de Bruno L\u00e9andri, \u00e0 Fabcaro, auteur, avec \u00c9ric Judor, du d\u00e9sopilant Guacamole Vaudou<\/em> (Seuil, 2022) ou encore aux \u00e9ditions Flblb, qui en ont fait un des axes forts de leur catalogue.<\/p>\n

L\u2019exposition \u00c9ditions Flblb\u00a0: un labo de roman-photo<\/em>, qui s\u2019est r\u00e9cemment achev\u00e9e \u00e0 la Cit\u00e9 de la bande dessin\u00e9e et de l\u2019image (o\u00f9 elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e du 20 d\u00e9cembre 2024 au 9 mars 2025) me fournit le pr\u00e9texte pour interroger ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne qui pourrait sembler paradoxal. Pourquoi, en effet, des dessinateurs chercheraient-ils \u00e0 faire de l\u2019humour en troquant leur instrument habituel, le dessin, si propice aux exag\u00e9rations et d\u00e9formations cocasses de toutes sortes, pour la photographie, a priori plus \u00ab r\u00e9aliste \u00bb\u00a0? La r\u00e9ponse se laisse assez facilement trouver\u00a0: ce n\u2019est pas la photo en elle-m\u00eame qui est comique, c\u2019est justement le d\u00e9calage entre l\u2019effet de pr\u00e9sence qui s\u2019y attache et des situations improbables ou des dialogues absurdes.<\/p>\n

Ce d\u00e9calage s\u2019appuie d\u2019ailleurs quelquefois sur l\u2019h\u00e9ritage du roman-photo, la r\u00e9putation qui s\u2019y attache, l\u2019horizon d\u2019attente qu\u2019il suscite. C\u2019est tout particuli\u00e8rement le cas dans La Fabrique du prince charmant<\/em>, d\u2019Ovidie et Sophie-Marie Larrouy (Seuil, 2024), qui, en transposant l\u2019action dans un monde post #metoo, tourne en d\u00e9rision les clich\u00e9s de genre longtemps v\u00e9hicul\u00e9s par les romans-photos sentimentaux \u00ab \u00e0 l\u2019eau de rose \u00bb, y introduit une vision politique et f\u00e9ministe. Mais c\u2019est vrai \u00e9galement de Guacamole Vaudou<\/em>, dans lequel le h\u00e9ros, incarn\u00e9 par Judor, n\u2019est pas indiff\u00e9rent au charme de la secr\u00e9taire de l\u2019agence de pub qui l\u2019emploie.<\/p>\n

\"\"On aura remarqu\u00e9 que les deux derniers ouvrages cit\u00e9s ont le m\u00eame \u00e9diteur. C\u2019est la directrice \u00e9ditoriale Nathalie Fiszman, responsable des projets grand public au sein de cette maison \u00e0 l\u2019image plut\u00f4t s\u00e9rieuse, qui est \u00e0 l\u2019origine de ce qui commence \u00e0 ressembler \u00e0 un d\u00e9but de collection. Sa premi\u00e8re incursion dans le genre fut Les Six Fonctions du langage<\/em>, de Cl\u00e9mentine M\u00e9lois, \u00e9crivaine membre de l\u2019Oulipo, en mars 2021. Les ventes furent suffisamment encourageantes pour lui donner envie de poursuivre (on parle de 15 000 exemplaires). Pourtant, il ne s\u2019agissait pas, \u00e0 mon sens, d\u2019une r\u00e9ussite. Que l\u2019autrice, plut\u00f4t que de faire proc\u00e9der \u00e0 des prises de vues originales, ait choisi le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 d\u2019un collage de fragments de romans-photos ant\u00e9rieurs, cela peut se d\u00e9fendre, et la pratique du d\u00e9tournement (dans laquelle s\u2019illustr\u00e8rent autrefois les Situationnistes) a prouv\u00e9 sa f\u00e9condit\u00e9. Mais il en r\u00e9sulte ici des images d\u2019une qualit\u00e9 de reproduction tr\u00e8s m\u00e9diocre, qui piquent litt\u00e9ralement les yeux, rendant la lecture p\u00e9nible.<\/p>\n

Quant \u00e0 l\u2019intention comique, elle repose, ici encore, sur le d\u00e9calage\u00a0: les personnages tiennent des propos \u00e0 connotation intellectuelle (on cite Jakobson et Wittgenstein) ou simplement sur-\u00e9crits, dans des situations prosa\u00efques, voire triviales. Version romantique, cela donne\u00a0: \u00ab Je suis la femme de ta vie, la lumi\u00e8re de tes jours, ton phare dans l\u2019obscurit\u00e9, si je n\u2019\u00e9tais pas l\u00e0 tu serais tellement triste que tu te laisserais mourir de soif et tu finirais lyophilis\u00e9 comme un vieux pruneau\u00a0?<\/em> \u00bb\u00a0; version cochonne\u00a0: \u00ab J\u2019ai le c\u0153ur qui bat entre les jambes\u00a0! Tartine-moi de cr\u00e8me au beurre, tire fort ma bobinette, fourre-moi comme une dinde aux pruneaux<\/em> \u00bb (mais d\u2019o\u00f9 vient cette obsession des pruneaux\u00a0?). On sourit au d\u00e9but, puis tr\u00e8s vite on se lasse du proc\u00e9d\u00e9, qui para\u00eet r\u00e9p\u00e9titif et forc\u00e9.<\/p>\n
