Le 18 d\u00e9cembre prochain ouvrira \u00e0 Chartres, dans les salles du COMPA (mus\u00e9e d\u00e9partemental, conservatoire de l\u2019agriculture m\u00ealant sciences, histoire, techniques et arts), une exposition temporaire dont j\u2019assure le commissariat scientifique, sur le th\u00e8me du paysage dans la bande dessin\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Ce n\u2019est pas du th\u00e8me du paysage que je parlerai ici aujourd\u2019hui, mais de ce que le visiteur d\u00e9couvrira \u00e0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e de l\u2019exposition\u00a0: une sorte de g\u00e9n\u00e9rique, ou de bande annonce, pr\u00e9sentant succinctement les 41 artistes convi\u00e9s \u00e0 y participer, avec, pour chacun, un autoportrait. L\u2019id\u00e9e de cette galerie devant laquelle, je n\u2019en doute pas, les visiteurs auront plaisir \u00e0 s\u2019attarder, n\u2019est pas de moi, mais de la graphiste Lawrence Bitterly, qui fait partie de notre \u00e9quipe et avec laquelle j\u2019avais d\u00e9j\u00e0 eu le plaisir de collaborer sur deux expositions ant\u00e9rieures, \u00e0 Angoul\u00eame. Cette suggestion m\u2019a ravi car elle r\u00e9pond \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat que j\u2019\u00e9prouve de longue date pour la pratique de l\u2019autoportrait.<\/p>\n

Dans les derniers num\u00e9ros de Buck<\/em>, le fanzine que, lyc\u00e9en, j\u2019ai anim\u00e9 dans les ann\u00e9es 1970, on pouvait d\u00e9j\u00e0 trouver une rubrique qui lui \u00e9tait d\u00e9di\u00e9e, pour laquelle Christian Godard, Dupa, Tibet, Jacques Martin et Fran\u00e7ois Craenhals avaient r\u00e9pondu \u00e0 ma sollicitation.<\/p>\n

Plus tard, quand, en 2003, je publiai chez Mosquito un essai intitul\u00e9 Lignes de vie<\/em>, consacr\u00e9 au visage dessin\u00e9, je ne m\u2019attardai pas outre mesure sur la question, consacrant seulement quelques pages (70 \u00e0 74) aux dessinateurs qui, tels Cosey, Breccia, Boilet ou Buzzelli, ont pr\u00eat\u00e9 leurs propres traits \u00e0 tel ou tel de leurs personnages.<\/p>\n

Je me rattrapai en signant plus r\u00e9cemment, dans le Bouquin de la bande dessin\u00e9e<\/em>, chez Robert Laffont, un article sur l\u2019\u00ab autorepr\u00e9sentation \u00bb, consubstantielle au r\u00e9cit de soi, genre qui a pris l\u2019essor que l\u2019on sait. (On trouvera d\u2019ailleurs, dans le m\u00eame ouvrage, un article de ma main sur le \u00ab paysage \u00bb.)<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai longtemps r\u00eav\u00e9 de monter une exposition enti\u00e8rement d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019autoportrait, pour laquelle j\u2019ai rassembl\u00e9 un tr\u00e8s riche dossier iconographique. Car m\u00eame les dessinateurs qui ne versent pas dans la confession ont souvent utilis\u00e9 la page blanche comme miroir, dans l\u2019intimit\u00e9 de leurs carnets ou quand, \u00e0 des fins promotionnelles, ils se dessinaient soit \u00e0 leur table de travail soit entour\u00e9s de leurs personnages. Les autoportraits d\u2019un Moebius ou d\u2019un Crumb ne se comptent pas et t\u00e9moignent d\u2019un questionnement sur soi men\u00e9 avec constance sur une tr\u00e8s longue dur\u00e9e, dans un geste somme toute comparable \u00e0 celui d\u2019un Rembrandt, d\u2019un Van Gogh ou d\u2019une Schjerfbeck, l\u2019autod\u00e9rision en plus.<\/p>\n

Pour la galerie d\u2019autoportraits qui sera montr\u00e9e \u00e0 Chartres, j\u2019ai pr\u00e9lev\u00e9 des images d\u00e9j\u00e0 existantes dans les bandes dessin\u00e9es de quelques-uns (Baudoin, Davodeau, Lepage, Meurisse, Neaud ou Ware) ou des dessins que d\u2019autres avaient produits pour une occasion diff\u00e9rente (Crumb, Guibert, Loustal, Mathieu, Mattotti, McGuire, Schuiten ou Toppi). Mais nombre d\u2019autoportraits seront absolument in\u00e9dits, les artistes concern\u00e9s (Bonneau, Flao, Fl\u00e9chais, Furmark, Jaffredo, Lomig, Micol, Nesme, Nocq, Othats, Penyas, Perriot, Roudeau, Trouillard, Vanoli ou Vuillier) ayant fort obligeamment accept\u00e9 de se pr\u00eater \u00e0 l\u2019exercice \u00e0 ma demande. La galerie qui en r\u00e9sulte est fascinante, et me confirme dans la conviction qu\u2019un autoportrait est souvent un concentr\u00e9 de l\u2019art propre \u00e0 tel ou tel cr\u00e9ateur, un pr\u00e9cipit\u00e9 de sa po\u00e9tique.<\/p>\n
