Peut-\u00eatre y aura-t-on \u00e9t\u00e9 attentif\u00a0: outre l\u2019embl\u00e9matique palmier, il y a un second motif que l\u2019on retrouve dans nombre de cartoons <\/em>sur le th\u00e8me de l\u2019\u00eele d\u00e9serte\u00a0: c\u2019est celui du bateau que l\u2019on aper\u00e7oit \u00e0 l\u2019horizon. Il s\u2019agit quelquefois de celui d\u2019o\u00f9 pourrait venir un hypoth\u00e9tique salut (\u00e0 l\u2019instar du brick l\u2019Argus qui, le 17 juillet 1816, recueillit les quinze survivants du radeau de la M\u00e9duse), mais c\u2019est, plus souvent, celui-l\u00e0 m\u00eame qui vient de faire naufrage, et dont la coque, peu \u00e0 peu, s\u2019enfonce dans les flots.<\/p>\n

Une page de la s\u00e9rie Balthazar<\/em>, par Bob De Moor (une cinquantaine de planches publi\u00e9es dans l\u2019hebdomadaire Tintin<\/em> de 1965 \u00e0 1967, un album chez Magic Strip en 1984) r\u00e9ussit le tour de force de r\u00e9unir les deux. Balthazar a fait naufrage mais sur l\u2019\u00eelot qu\u2019il a pu gagner \u00e0 la nage il trouve une r\u00e9serve providentielle de fus\u00e9es de d\u00e9tresse. Las\u00a0! La premi\u00e8re qu\u2019il tire fait exploser le p\u00e9trolier qui aurait pu le recueillir.<\/p>\n

Nous avons rencontr\u00e9 ce motif du bateau faisant naufrage chez Mose, chez Maurice Henry, en voici un exemple chez Bosc.<\/p>\n

\"Dessin<\/p>\n

Et voici maintenant un cartoon <\/em>de Gary Larson, tir\u00e9 de sa c\u00e9l\u00e8bre s\u00e9rie The Far Side<\/em> (1980-1995), qui constitue l\u2019un des fleurons de l\u2019humour absurde. Sur un minuscule \u00eelot, le canard, personnage r\u00e9current de l\u2019humoriste am\u00e9ricain, y accueille un naufrag\u00e9 en tenue de laboratoire par ces mots\u00a0: \u00ab Tiens donc, le professeur Jenkins\u00a0!… Mon vieil ennemi\u00a0!… Nous nous retrouvons, mais cette fois l\u2019avantage est pour moi\u00a0! Ha\u00a0! Ha\u00a0! Ha\u00a0!<\/em> \u00bb Tandis qu\u2019\u00e0 moins d\u2019une encablure, le bateau du professeur s\u2019ab\u00eeme dans les flots.<\/p>\n

La r\u00e9currence de cet \u00e9l\u00e9ment secondaire invite \u00e0 quelques r\u00e9flexions. Il est frappant que, dans notre corpus, les causes du naufrage ne soient jamais apparentes. Pas le moindre iceberg, pas le plus petit r\u00e9cif, aucun signe d\u2019un quelconque ouragan\u00a0: le bateau sombre par temps calme, sur une mer d\u2019huile, sans cause apparente (la colonne de fum\u00e9e s\u2019\u00e9chappant de celui de Larson laisse toutefois supposer un incendie \u00e0 bord). L\u2019autre anomalie est \u00e9videmment le fait qu\u2019il n\u2019y a g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u2013 le dessin de Bosc fait exception \u2013 qu\u2019un seul rescap\u00e9 (\u00e0 comparer avec les 711 survivants du Titanic ou les 147 personnes mont\u00e9es \u00e0 bord du radeau de la M\u00e9duse, avant que leur nombre ne diminue tragiquement au fil des jours) \u2013 dans le meilleur des cas un couple.<\/p>\n

Le th\u00e8me de la catastrophe maritime est un classique du roman d’aventures. Il est omnipr\u00e9sent dans l’\u0153uvre de Jules Verne qui, dans ce domaine, emprunte principalement \u00e0 deux pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs : Daniel Defoe bien s\u00fbr, mais \u00e9galement Edgar Allan Poe (pas moins de quatre naufrages dans les Aventures d’Arthur Gordon Pym<\/em> !). Sur ce sujet, on peut se reporter \u00e0 l’ouvrage d’Yves Gilli, Florent Montaclair et Sylvie Petit Le Naufrage dans l’\u0153uvre de Jules Verne<\/em> (L’Harmattan, 1998). Les auteurs montrent que le naufrage est un r\u00e9v\u00e9lateur de la vision que se faisait le romancier de la condition humaine. D’une part, il met en lumi\u00e8re la folie, le d\u00e9sespoir, la barbarie, la r\u00e9gression collective, de l’autre il permet aux \u00eatres d’exception de se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler et de donner leur pleine mesure.<\/p>\n

Les dessins d’humour ne conservent rien de tout ce qui fait la dramaturgie et la richesse litt\u00e9raires du naufrage. La repr\u00e9sentation du bateau en train de couler est contingente ; seul compte l’apr\u00e8s, quand le naufrage se retrouve seul sur son \u00eele (tels Grant ou Ayrton chez Verne). Le fait de montrer le bateau en arri\u00e8re-plan apporte seulement une pr\u00e9cision temporelle ; il \u00e9tablit que, la catastrophe venant juste de se produire, le naufrag\u00e9 n’a pris pied sur son \u00eele d\u00e9serte que depuis tr\u00e8s peu de temps. Quand le bateau sinistr\u00e9 n’est pas montr\u00e9, rien ne permet de savoir depuis combien de temps le personnage habite son \u00eele \u2013 rien, sinon l’\u00e9tat de ses v\u00eatements et la longueur de sa barbe.<\/p>\n
