En 1925, Zig et Puce r\u00eavaient d\u2019Am\u00e9rique et cherchaient par tous les moyens \u00e0 gagner New York. Un si\u00e8cle plus tard, la bande dessin\u00e9e fran\u00e7aise verrait-elle \u00e0 nouveau le pays de l\u2019Oncle Sam comme une Terre promise\u00a0? Apr\u00e8s L\u2019Am\u00e9ricain<\/em> de Lo\u00efc Guyon en 2021 (Sarbacane), voici, chez 2024, Je suis un Am\u00e9ricain<\/em> de Guillaume Chauchat. Il est vrai que ce dessinateur, n\u00e9 en 1980, form\u00e9 aux Arts d\u00e9coratifs de Strasbourg, a pass\u00e9 une partie de son enfance aux \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/p>\n

Je suis un Am\u00e9ricain<\/em> n\u2019est pas pour autant un livre autobiographique. C\u2019est l\u2019histoire de Jean et de Jane, et aussi de la jeune Jeannie. Lui r\u00eave des \u00c9tats-Unis, au point de se faire passer pour un yankee, elle fantasme la France. La rencontre entre ces deux personnes qui se racontent des histoires en miroir aura des allures d\u2019\u00e9vidence\u00a0: \u00ab Elle avait sa France, il avait son Am\u00e9rique \u00bb. Le r\u00e9cit navigue entre le fran\u00e7ais et l\u2019anglais, entre r\u00eave, affabulation et r\u00e9alit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Laur\u00e9at du concours Jeunes Talents \u00e0 Angoul\u00eame en 2010, b\u00e9n\u00e9ficiaire d\u2019une exposition au m\u00eame festival d\u00e8s 2015, Guillaume Chauchat a beaucoup diversifi\u00e9 ses activit\u00e9s (illustration, sculpture) et n\u2019a pas encore r\u00e9alis\u00e9 dans la bande dessin\u00e9e la carri\u00e8re \u00e0 laquelle il semblait promis. La trilogie \u00e0 laquelle son nom \u00e9tait attach\u00e9 jusqu\u2019ici, Il se passe des choses<\/em> (2013-2016), relevait de la po\u00e9sie visuelle et des jeux graphiques \u2013 dans la lign\u00e9e, soulignait \u00e0 bon droit son \u00e9diteur, du dessin d\u2019id\u00e9e<\/em> fa\u00e7on Saul Steinberg.<\/p>\n

Dans Je suis un Am\u00e9ricain<\/em>, le travail sur la forme est tout aussi concert\u00e9 mais tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rent, s\u2019inscrivant plut\u00f4t dans la continuit\u00e9 de son album jeunesse La Villa nuit<\/em> (Biscoto, 2023), dont le protagoniste, d\u2019ailleurs, \u00e9tait d\u00e9j\u00e0 un petit gar\u00e7on pr\u00e9nomm\u00e9 Jean. Le trait, \u00e9pais et gras, donne l\u2019impression que les dessins ont \u00e9t\u00e9 grossis selon un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 photom\u00e9canique \u2013 ce qui, du reste, serait coh\u00e9rent avec l\u2019esth\u00e9tique du fragment et du close-up<\/em> cultiv\u00e9e par l\u2019auteur. S\u2019y ajoutent un jeu sur des couleurs primaires (4 pantones), un travail sur le cadre \u2013 avec des images le plus souvent enferm\u00e9es dans un gaufrier de 6 cases mais qui quelquefois flottent dans le blanc de la page \u2013 et une alternance entre les s\u00e9quences narratives et d\u2019autres suites de pages plus d\u00e9concertantes, o\u00f9 des figures incongrues voire surr\u00e9elles accompagnent le texte sur un mode oblique ou distanci\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Le dessin de Chauchat, d\u2019une grande s\u00fbret\u00e9, est fond\u00e9 sur la r\u00e9ticence\u00a0: il en montre le moins possible. Les \u00ab fonds \u00bb d\u2019image (d\u00e9cors) sont nettoy\u00e9s, les personnages r\u00e9duits \u00e0 des silhouettes, avec tr\u00e8s peu de marqueurs d\u2019identit\u00e9\u00a0; et, dans ce petit th\u00e9\u00e2tre elliptique, les objets occupent autant de place que le vivant.<\/p>\n

On songe \u00e0 la Pravda <\/em>de Guy Peellaert pour les couleurs, et \u00e0 certains travaux de Paul Cox. Chauchat est un graphiste autant qu\u2019un dessinateur, d\u2019ailleurs tous ses livres sont des objets magnifiquement maquett\u00e9s, celui-ci ne faisant pas exception.
