Reconnu et appr\u00e9ci\u00e9 en France, o\u00f9 il vit depuis le d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt, Gilbert Shelton n\u2019avait pas encore re\u00e7u beaucoup d\u2019attention de la part des milieux acad\u00e9miques. Cette injustice a \u00e9t\u00e9 rattrap\u00e9e avec l\u2019organisation, par l\u2019\u00c9cole sup\u00e9rieure des beaux-arts de Bordeaux et, conjointement, l\u2019universit\u00e9 Bordeaux Montaigne, d\u2019une journ\u00e9e d\u2019\u00e9tudes. Intitul\u00e9e \u00ab Gilbert Shelton \/ Comix, psych\u00e9d\u00e9lisme et underground, freaks<\/em> et phacoch\u00e8res\u00a0: un itin\u00e9raire graphique dans la contre-culture \u00bb, et plac\u00e9e sous la direction de Jean-Paul Gabilliet, Pierre Ponant et Camille de Singly, elle s\u2019est tenue le 8 avril 2022\u00a0; ses actes viennent de para\u00eetre aux Presses universitaires de Bordeaux, sous un titre un peu simplifi\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\"Couverture<\/p>\n

La carri\u00e8re de Shelton est une success story<\/em> internationale. Chez nous, ses Freak Brothers<\/em> et son in\u00e9narrable Chat de Fat Freddy<\/em> ont \u00e9t\u00e9 h\u00e9berg\u00e9s successivement par deux maisons d\u2019\u00e9dition de taille modeste\u00a0: Artefact (de 1978 \u00e0 1985) puis T\u00eate Rock Underground (devenu The-Troc Underground) \u00e0 partir de 1993. Mais le livre anniversaire publi\u00e9 par Knockabout Comics, \u00e0 Londres, en 2017, Fifty Freakin\u2019 Years with the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers<\/em>, faisait \u00e9tat de traductions en seize langues et annon\u00e7ait plus de quarante millions d\u2019exemplaires vendus. Et le dessinateur d\u2019origine texane a incontestablement marqu\u00e9 de son influence de nombreux cr\u00e9ateurs \u00e0 travers l\u2019Europe\u00a0: Tramber, Jano, Pic et Zou ou Mattt Konture en France, Max en Espagne, Hunt Emerson au Royaume-Uni, Peter Pontiac aux Pays-Bas, pour ne citer que ceux-l\u00e0.<\/p>\n

On peut \u00eatre intrigu\u00e9 par le fait (le livre des PuB n\u2019y insiste pas) que ce cr\u00e9ateur reconnu comme une figure de la contre-culture ne coche pas vraiment les cases habituelles de ce type de profil. D\u2019abord, parce qu\u2019il fut longtemps, comme cofondateur de Rip Off Press, imprimerie et maison d\u2019\u00e9dition, un chef d\u2019entreprise (qui compta jusqu\u2019\u00e0 quatorze salari\u00e9s)\u00a0; ensuite parce qu\u2019il est rest\u00e9 attach\u00e9 depuis plus d\u2019un demi-si\u00e8cle \u00e0 son m\u00eame trio de personnages, Phineas T. Freakears, Freewheelin\u2019 Franklin et Fat Freddy Freekowtski, jouant \u00e0 fond la carte de la s\u00e9rie, concept qui appartient plut\u00f4t au domaine de la grande \u00e9dition (le seul autre exemple de h\u00e9ros durable issu de l\u2019underground est Zippy the Pinhead, de Bill Griffith)\u00a0; et enfin parce qu\u2019il a tr\u00e8s t\u00f4t \u00e9prouv\u00e9 le besoin de partager la cr\u00e9ation avec des co-auteurs ou assistants, Dave Sheridan puis Paul Mavrides hier, le Fran\u00e7ais Pic depuis 1992, en contradiction avec le credo ordinaire des artistes de l\u2019underground qui privil\u00e9gie l\u2019individualisme, la subjectivit\u00e9, le style idiomatique.<\/p>\n

Shelton m\u2019appara\u00eet donc comme une sorte de figure du milieu, qui s\u2019inscrit dans l\u2019histoire, les valeurs et la po\u00e9tique de l\u2019underground, et en m\u00eame temps \u2013 comme dirait notre Pr\u00e9sident de la R\u00e9publique \u2013 a cr\u00e9\u00e9 les conditions d\u2019une \u0153uvre qui s\u2019est \u00e9mancip\u00e9e de la marge et fait \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent figure de classique de la bande dessin\u00e9e d\u2019humour. Alan Moore a, du reste, bien raison de qualifier Shelton de \u00ab natural comedic genius \u00bb (et le sc\u00e9nariste britannique fut lui-m\u00eame un de ses \u00e9pigones lorsque, en 1979, il cr\u00e9a\u2013 texte ET DESSINS \u2013 le strip Maxwell The Magic Cat<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Dans un billet r\u00e9cent (https:\/\/www.thierry-groensteen.fr\/index.php\/2024\/02\/11\/quand-les-create\u2026nt-du-patrimoine\/<\/a>), je rendais compte de l\u2019essai de Beno\u00eet Crucifix sur l\u2019investissement des plus grands auteurs am\u00e9ricains de romans graphiques dans la valorisation et la transmission du patrimoine des comics, en particulier des newspaper strips<\/em>. Je conclurai donc celui-ci par l\u2019\u00e9vocation d\u2019une histoire en trois pages dessin\u00e9e par Shelton en 1982. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une aventure de Fat Freddy\u2019s Cat. Elle a tr\u00e8s probablement \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9e en fran\u00e7ais dans l\u2019un ou l\u2019autre recueil, mais pour ma part je ne la poss\u00e8de qu\u2019en version originale (dans The Best of Fat Freddy\u2019s Cat 2<\/em>, Knockabout Comics, 1984). Le chat y d\u00e9plore la perte de qualit\u00e9 des strips qui paraissent dans les journaux, s\u2019en prenant notamment \u00e0 un de ses pairs, Garfield. Puis il s\u2019endort et se retrouve, en r\u00eave, p\u00e9n\u00e9trer au paradis du comic strip<\/em>, o\u00f9 il retrouve tous ses chats pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9s\u00a0: Krazy Kat, Felix the Cat, Fritz The Cat, le chat de Kliban et la Panth\u00e8re rose.\u00a0Une filiation se trouve ainsi revendiqu\u00e9e, qui efface d\u00e9finitivement toute id\u00e9e de fronti\u00e8re entre les comics distribu\u00e9s par les syndicates <\/em>et les comix underground<\/em>\u00a0: il n\u2019y a que des auteurs.<\/p>\n
