L\u2019Illusion magnifique<\/em>, d\u2019Alessandro Tota (\u00e9ditions Gallimard), est un album dont la forme classique emballe un propos \u00e0 la fois ambitieux et divertissant. Il se d\u00e9roule dans le New York de la fin des ann\u00e9es trente, au moment o\u00f9 l\u2019industrie encore tr\u00e8s artisanale du comic book<\/em> va prendre un tournant d\u00e9cisif avec l\u2019arriv\u00e9e des premiers super-h\u00e9ros.<\/p>\n

Dans ce livre rythm\u00e9, dessin\u00e9 d\u2019un trait all\u00e8gre et particuli\u00e8rement bien dialogu\u00e9, certains des personnages paraissent sous leur propre nom \u2013 ainsi Bob Kane, le cr\u00e9ateur de Batman \u2013, d\u2019autres sont \u00ab \u00e0 cl\u00e9 \u00bb\u00a0: le site de l\u2019\u00e9diteur vend quelques m\u00e8ches en r\u00e9v\u00e9lant que \u00ab le journal communiste The Rise of the Masses<\/em> est une variante de New Masses<\/em>, Donny l\u2019\u00e9diteur mafieux reprend la trajectoire d\u2019Harry Donenfeld de DC Comics. Quant au peintre arm\u00e9nien, c\u2019est le portrait crach\u00e9 d\u2019Arshile Gorky. \u00bb Mais il importe assez peu au lecteur de disposer de ces r\u00e9f\u00e9rences, l\u2019intrigue \u00e9tant suffisamment romanc\u00e9e pour ne pas inciter \u00e0 une lecture documentaire \u2013 contrairement \u00e0 la nouvelle d\u2019Alan Moore sur l\u2019histoire des comics<\/em> que j\u2019ai comment\u00e9e ici-m\u00eame (https:\/\/www.thierry-groensteen.fr\/index.php\/2023\/11\/05\/alan-moore-regle\u2026-avec-les-comics<\/strong>\/<\/a>), o\u00f9 tout, au contraire, invitait \u00e0 identifier les mod\u00e8les des personnes et des \u0153uvres cit\u00e9es.<\/p>\n

Du reste, Tota adopte d\u2019embl\u00e9e une perspective d\u00e9cal\u00e9e en centrant son r\u00e9cit sur une femme, Diana Morgan, mont\u00e9e \u00e0 New York depuis son Kansas natal et qui, apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9crit quelques articles dans The Rise of the Masses,<\/em> devient, sous le pseudonyme masculin de Bob Smoke, sc\u00e9nariste des exploits d\u2019un super-h\u00e9ros nomm\u00e9 Dogman. Autant qu\u2019on sache, les femmes \u00e9taient fort peu nombreuses dans le milieu des comic book<\/em>\u00a0; aucune sc\u00e9nariste qui aurait \u0153uvr\u00e9 dans les ann\u00e9es trente n\u2019est pass\u00e9e \u00e0 la post\u00e9rit\u00e9, et les noms des rares dessinatrices de l\u2019\u00e9poque (Corinne Dillon, Jean Hotchkiss ou Claire Moe) ne sont connus que de quelques historiens.<\/p>\n

Plonger cette h\u00e9ro\u00efne qui sort de sa ferme et ne conna\u00eet rien ni \u00e0 la grande ville, ni au monde du travail ni au milieu de l\u2019art et de l\u2019\u00e9dition, c\u2019est adopter le point de vue ing\u00e9nu du candide, qui donne \u00e0 l\u2019ouvrage sa fra\u00eecheur et son charme.<\/p>\n

Rares sont les \u0153uvres de fiction qui r\u00e9ussissent \u00e0 concilier \u00e9vocation du r\u00e9el, reconstitution pr\u00e9cise d\u2019un contexte historique (la Grande D\u00e9pression, le p\u00e9ril hitl\u00e9rien, les combats du syndicalisme ouvrier, le d\u00e9ni du parti communiste am\u00e9ricain relativement aux crimes de Staline, les ravages du capitalisme, la mafia\u2026) et hommage \u00e0 l\u2019imaginaire\u00a0; le plus d\u00e9brid\u00e9, celui des pulps, des polars et des comics \u2013 et surtout des super-h\u00e9ros\u00a0qui colonisent l\u2019esprit de Diana ! Alessandro Tota se tient sur cette ligne de cr\u00eate avec une aisance souveraine.<\/p>\n

Un deuxi\u00e8me tome \u00e0 venir nous contera la suite des aventures de Diana. On v\u00e9rifiera alors si son r\u00eave de devenir \u00e9crivaine n\u2019\u00e9tait effectivement rien d\u2019autre qu\u2019une illusion magnifique<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Une remarque en guise de conclusion\u00a0: l\u2019album montre des dessinateurs de BD constituant une sorte de sous-prol\u00e9tariat exploit\u00e9 et mal pay\u00e9 \u2013 \u00e0 l\u2019exception d\u2019un Bob Kane devenu millionnaire. On serait enclin \u00e0 penser que cette condition appartient \u00e0 un pass\u00e9 depuis longtemps r\u00e9volu, celui d\u2019un artisanat et d\u2019une industrie \u00e0 leurs d\u00e9buts. Si le contexte de production a chang\u00e9, si les causes sont diff\u00e9rentes, les donn\u00e9es dont nous disposons sur la paup\u00e9risation que connaissent les cr\u00e9ateurs de bande dessin\u00e9e depuis quelques ann\u00e9es montrent que, malheureusement, tout n\u2019a pas chang\u00e9.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
